Sedation Dentistry
Picture undergoing a complex dental procedure such as a root canal, extraction, or oral surgery. Once the treatment is done, you have no recollection of the duration, pain, noise, or expected discomfort. We are delighted to provide our patients with the option of sedation dentistry, ensuring a comfortable, safe, and effective experience. Those who benefit from sedation dentistry typically exhibit:
- Fear or anxiety related to dental visits
- Difficulty sitting still for extended periods
- Challenges in getting and staying numb from anesthetics
WHAT IS SEDATION DENTISTRY?
Sedation dentistry enables your dentist to perform various dental treatments safely and comfortably for individuals who feel anxious about visiting the dentist. Sedation dentistry offers several advantages, including:
- No memory of the procedure
- No awareness of time during sedation
- No perception of smell or sound
- Elimination of fear or anxiety during treatment
Patients who have experienced sedation dentistry describe it as a simple and relaxing way to undergo dental procedures.
I AM CONCERNED ABOUT BEING UNCONSCIOUS. WHAT LEVELS OF SEDATION ARE AVAILABLE?
There’s no need to worry about sedation dentistry at our practice. We are licensed by the American Dental Association, maintaining a respectful and professional approach at all times. Sedation dentistry is regulated by law, and your dentist can administer treatment at three sedative states: mild sedation, moderate sedation, and deep sedation.
- Mild Sedation: Anxiolysis is the lightest form, often used for mild anxiety, longer procedures, or complex situations. It is typically administered orally, leaving you awake or very sleepy but relaxed.
- Moderate Sedation: Conscious sedation, often involving light IV sedation, is suitable for moderate dental anxiety or lengthy procedures. You remain awake but in a deep state of relaxation. It is advisable to have someone accompany you due to the sedative’s lingering effects.
- Deep Sedation: Patients experience a fluctuation between consciousness and unconsciousness. There is no recollection of the treatment, and it’s recommended to have someone accompany you due to the extended recovery period.
HOW ARE SEDATIVES ADMINISTERED?
- Inhalation: Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is commonly used for mild to moderate anxiety, with a quick recovery allowing for the immediate resumption of normal activities.
- Oral: Oral sedation, a prevalent method, involves taking a prescription pill about an hour before the appointment, inducing full relaxation by the time you arrive at the office.
