BROKEN TOOTH: IS IT AN EMERGENCY OR NOT?

Have you ever bitten into something expecting it to be soft and chewy, only to encounter a hard and crunchy surprise? If you find that you’ve chipped or broken a tooth, it’s essential to assess the damage. Dr. Sindledecker and Dr. Saltz emphasize that while a broken or chipped tooth typically doesn’t constitute a dental emergency unless accompanied by severe pain or bleeding, you should still contact us promptly for an appointment.

Upon contacting us, please mention that you’ve experienced a broken tooth so that we can prioritize your visit. Following a thorough evaluation, we’ll recommend an appropriate course of action. For small chips, smoothing it out may suffice. In the case of a larger break, the dentist might fill in the space with a composite material that matches your natural teeth.

In situations involving severe pain, excessive bleeding, a major break, or a lost tooth, consider it a dental emergency, and reach out to us immediately. As emergency dental specialists, we can schedule an appointment promptly and provide guidance on the necessary steps.

If you’re experiencing bleeding, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply pressure. Using an ice pack can help reduce swelling, but avoid taking aspirin to prevent increased bleeding. In the event of a completely knocked-out tooth, rinse it under running water without scrubbing, holding it only by the crown (the visible part above the gum line). If possible, reposition the tooth in the socket while heading to our office, or store it in a mild salt solution or milk. Prevent the tooth from drying out, as this can lead to further damage. Upon your arrival, our dentist will assess whether the tooth can be saved or requires replacement.

While a broken tooth might not always be an emergency, seeking treatment at Sindledecker Dentistry is crucial. What may initially seem like a cosmetic issue could lead to more significant damage if left untreated for an extended period.
